If it was one of those days that I've been waiting for it to come, it'll be this day. The day I will be called to the Bar, ie. admitted to the High Court of Malaya as an advocate and solicitor. That day too, would mean, I have the ticket to go wherever (organization, companies etc). Of course, I made sure that I achieved this first prior to leaving Chambers. Be reminded that this was coincidental when it happened, just a week prior to my resignation. I had not intended to make this part of the act, though it may seem very much like it.
17th February 2012. 3 years in service and finally I got that cert. My admission to the Bar was different than those who did their chambering. The requirement under the Legal Profession Act is that those who are in service may be exempted from pupillage (another word for 'chambering') if they have served for a period of 1 year and subject to the approval of exemption by the Attorney General himself. Without this exemption, civil servants may not be called to the Bar.
I initiated my petition to be admitted in January 2011. But I procrastinated for months then I had to stall the process even later as I was on maternity leave. When I came back to work, I continued on with the process. I have to warn you that this whole process is cumbersome and tedious! Back and forth to KL Bar, Bar Council and KL Court. Attending talks by KL Bar, so much more. It really does require a lot of patience and berzikir hahaha. To make things worse, court staff aren't friendly and the guards are bitchy as hell. Believe me, I had my moments of anger completing this petition. Be rest assured that it is worth the effort the moment you receive that scroll.
Prior to the day of the call, we are to prepare a draft speech in regards to yours truly. In the speech, we are to introduce ourselves, our backgrounds and what not and to whom do we like to give our appreciation and gratitude to. It's almost funny that I had to write about myself, praising and talking good stuff about me. Macam angkat bakul like that. But it is part and parcel of the speech so angkat bakul it is lol. There were a list of people whom I have thanked with obvious ones - to Allah, husband, parents, family and friends. But I'd like to give special thanks to Nurul (Syazana) for always assisting me in preparing the papers. Without her much help, confirm lagi stress nak file petition ni :D
After 13 months (instead of the usual 9 months period), I finally got my call to be admitted to the Bar. Now I know why they call it 'Long Call'. Memang LONG lah the process. Lol.
